Welcome to the Gamut String Calculator

These calculators can be used to calculate the gauges of gut strings on almost any instrument.

Choose your instrument from the list on the left.

This will bring up the calculator in this frame.

The calculator will start with a set of default tensions, pitch and string length.

You can change the pitch standard by selecting a different one from the drop down list box.

You can change the string length by typing in a different number in the string length box. (The string length is the distance from the nut to the bridge measured in centimeters.)

The calculator will load with default tensions for each string. You can change the tension for each string by typing a new number into the box next to the frequency of the note.

When you have the pitch, string length and tensions set, click the "calculate" button.

This will create a list of diameters based on the information in the form.

Each gauge has a link to a page which explains the types of Gamut Strings available for this gauge.

You can change pitch, string length and tensions to see what different gauges will result by changing the information.
